This model was built by one of our members from a kit produced by Kontax Engineering Ltd. It is the KS90 model, which was very easy to assemble and is beautifully made. Once built, setting up was relatively simple and the result is this lovely little engine that is a delight to watch. It will easily run on the heat from a cup of tea, and performs well sat on a laptop computer.
The Stirling engine was invented by Robert Stirling in 1816, its first use being as a pump engine in a quarry. It works by temperature differential between the top and bottom plates, I use a cup of tea to heat the bottom plate, whilst the top plate stays at room temperature. If you cool the bottom plate the engine runs in reverse.
This model was scratch-built by another of our members. It is a 1/4 size AE & H Robinsons engine that was very popular at the time. Building it was one thing but making it go was not easy, in fact it was to be around twenty years before it finally ran but then not that well. However it looks reasonably good after mounting on a plinth and applying some paint (see picture).
