One of our 'senior' members describes projects she has made using Meccano:-
"As I do not possess any machine tools other than an electric drill and a bench grinder, I am unable to make anything as complex as most other members. However, I have recently expanded an old Meccano set and have spent the time at home over the past year constructing a few models which may be of interest. My main reason for doing this has been to assist with dexterity as I get older and to keep my brain active as I try to decode instructions originally meant for children!
One of the models I constructed is based on a description from a pre-war
set G, and represents a small 0-4-0 tank locomotive. I realise that as with all Meccano models, this is only a representation of a locomotive but at least it doesn't need a steam test!
I have also made a very useful strip and plate bending machine which involved purchasing ⅜" brass rod which the vendor kindly cut to into 75mm lengths for me. I found a local engineer who drilled the ends of each rod to ⅛" so that I could use a 5/32" BSW tap to provide the correct thread for Meccano bolts. I also purchased a 5/32" BSW die and cut the main threaded rod that adjusts the roller position from an old 5" Meccano rod. All the other parts are from old Meccano that I purchased on-line. The machine works very well on both the flexible plates and strips".
