Bournemouth & District Society of Model Engineers
A Company Limited by Guarantee in England and Wales No 3351832

A brief overview

B&DSME was established in 1924 and has a membership of about 80 including wives and partners, many of whom take an active part in running the Society. Members have a wide range of model engineering interests including locomotives, traction engines, clock making, stationary steam engines, and many other facets of the hobby.
A large number of the members have workshops with metal working tools and machines and have constructed their own models. The Society runs special events for charitable and other good causes throughout the year.

Location

The principle asset of the Society is the Littledown Miniature Railway which is situated to the rear of the Littledown Centre off Castle Lane East, Bournemouth.

Details for finding the site, parking facilities and a full description of the construction and development of the track and associated components are available on our About B&DSME page. The raised track is suitable for running 7¼, 5, and 3½ inch gauge locomotives.

Gallery

Our Gallery contains many interesting photographs which illustrate our facilities and activities.
Visitors

Visitors are always welcome to the track on running days. If visitors wish to run a locomotive evidence of Third Party Insurance will be required. If using a steam locomotive a current boiler certificate will be needed.

If carrying passengers, coal burning locomotives must be equipped with a spark arrester. All locomotives will require a solid bar coupling. Riding trolleys will normally be available. The anti-tip arrangements on the track may prove restrictive for some individually-owned trolleys.
The Society

The Society is a member of the Federation of Model Engineering Societies. Details of events can be found in the What's On section.
